Directions

A ‘Thought for the day’ for Black Cat Radio – 7th September 2019

I have a confession to make – I have a terrible sense of direction! This is the complete opposite of my husband, who always knows where he is, down to the actual compass direction he’s going in. Ask me whether Little Paxton is north, south, east or west of St Neots and I’ll just look at you blankly. I can get between the two because I know which road turnings to take and which landmarks I have to go past but in a strange place I can get lost very quickly. This happened last weekend when I drove to a festival in Northamptonshire and got lost in some twisty country lanes. I got there in the end but I had to phone a friend to manage it.

For this reason I love sat navs. I can just drive along merrily relying on the electronic voice to tell me where to go. Much easier than trying to follow a paper map or remember what someone told me about the route.

But it’s not just when driving that we can get lost. Sometimes life is confusing, unsettling or downright scary, and we can feel like we don’t know what we’re doing or where we’re going. Sometimes we can feel that way about the wider world as well, especially when we watch the news. When that happens it can be helpful to get some help from an outside source. For me that’s my faith, friends and family. For you it might be something else. Whatever it is, though, I hope that you are always able to find someone to help you when you get lost, and that you feel able to ask for help when you need it – after all, we all get lost sometimes, however good our sense of direction is.
